Life on our limousin farm.
On our limousin farm, we breed pure limousin cows and charollais/texel sheep, selling the majority of our calves and lambs at weaning, and retaining the best females for breeding. We have free range hens and eggs, outdoor pigs and rabbits, which provide us with a year round, varied, food supply for ourselves and all our guests.
See the farm in pictures around the year.
We farm 240 acres, and all this is pasture. This enables us to fatten the lambs and calves on the grass whilst they are still with their mothers. By optimising our grazing, our cows are fed nothing but grass in the summer and preserved grass (hay or silage), in the winter. As many of our ewes produce twins or triplets every year, it is necessary to feed them a cereal based food before and after lambing to ensure they produce enough milk to feed their lambs. All bought in feed is quality marked and GM free.
We sell our stock through a producer group, and under the quality marks 'Baronet' and 'Label Rouge'. These well respected quality marks dictate farming practice, standards of welfare, quality of feeds and housing, and record keeping. We are closely monitored and can expect 3 or 4 checks a year to ensure we are following these codes of practice.
We manage our farm with sustainablity in mind.
More about ecotourism and the environment
We run a welfare friendly farming system. Paula, one of the owners, is a veterinary surgeon and therefore animal welfare is always the top priority. The farm needed considerable renovation, and new construction, when purchased. All improvements have been made with animal comfort in mind.
Graham, the other half of the team, has always been a farmer. He managed a large RSPB farm in Scotland that was designed to demonstrate how conservation and farming can compliment each other.
Our farming methods aim to conserve our natural habitats and
embrace wildlife, whilst maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare.
